Clients often ask me how they can prepare for their photo session, so I wanted to dive into some tried-and-true tips for getting ready and making the most of our time together! Preparation can be the difference between a good session and an amazing one, and it helps you feel confident, relaxed, and ready to enjoy the experience fully.

So, this blog is a guide to help you arrive feeling prepared and excited for your session.

Why you should prepare for your photo session?

Preparing for a photo session helps make sure you feel confident, comfortable, and authentic in front of the camera. This translates into photos that truly capture your personality and connection.

In essence, preparation ensures the session feels relaxed, authentic, and reflective of who you are. It creates a strong foundation for memorable, beautiful photos that you’ll cherish.

How to prepare for your photo session

Preparing for your family photo session is essential to help you feel relaxed, enjoy the experience, and ensure your photos reflect the genuine connection of your family. Here’s a breakdown to make the most of your prep time:

Before the Session

  1. Answer the Style Questionnaire: This helps establish the vibe of the session, guiding wardrobe choices and overall mood to ensure your vision shines through.
  2. Decide on Wardrobe with Styling Assistance: We’ll work together to choose outfits that coordinate and complement the location and session style, allowing your family to feel comfortable and look cohesive.
  3. Complete the Client Questionnaire: About a week before your session, I’ll send a questionnaire to get to know your family better, capturing the personalities and dynamics that make you unique.
  4. Consider Nail Colors: If you want to use nail polish, opt for shades or designs that align with your outfits. This helps avoid any distractions and keeps the focus on your family’s connection.

Day of the Session

  1. Plan for Travel: Review the location, travel time, and parking options to ensure a smooth arrival. This helps minimize stress and keeps everyone in a positive mindset.
  2. Keep Kids Happy and Fed: Make sure kids have a snack close to the session time to prevent any hunger-related crankiness (we want their smiles, not their hangry faces!).
  3. Bathroom Breaks: Take care of bathroom trips ahead of time, especially if the location doesn’t have public restrooms, so everyone is comfortable and focused.
  4. Set the Tone with the Kids: Talk to your kids about the session with excitement, framing it as a fun activity rather than a task. This positivity will help them relax and enjoy the experience.
  5. Let Go of Stress and Expectations: As the session begins, take a moment to breathe, let go of any expectations, and focus on being present with your family. This genuine connection will shine through, creating beautiful, heartfelt images.

This thoughtful approach ensures that you and your family feel comfortable, connected, and ready to enjoy the session, resulting in photos you’ll cherish for years to come.

About this Rocco Park, New Smyrna Beach Family Photo Session

This is my fourth year in a row taking this family’s photos. It is the greatest honor for a photographer to be invited back year after year into our clients’ lives.

This family always lets me have creative control over the session. Since this was their 4th session with me, I am familiar with their style!

For years, I’ve had my eye on a particular tree in Rocco Park, New Smyrna Beach. It’s on the way to one of my regular spots, and I’ve always dreamed of doing a session there. When we arrived at our original location and found it occupied by an event, it felt like the perfect moment to finally try this spot. Thankfully, my clients were flexible and excited to pivot. Located across the street from the city airport, we had the added charm of single-engine planes taking off and landing throughout the shoot. We even caught one or two in the background of the photos, adding a unique touch to the session. This session was playful, wonderfully prepared, and the light through the spanish moss was the icing on the cake.
