Adventure family photo sessions are the heart of my photography business. When it comes to family sessions, I prefer to take a non-typical approach and throw out the posed traditional photos (Or at the least, take fewer of them) because I truly think your family shines more in an active environment.
Why is this the case? Because it shows personality, and there is always something new to be discovered! Why not share those discoveries with your family on a photo taking adventure?
No one wants boring family photos. I certainly don’t want to take boring photos of your family, and your session should be an experience – NOT another check on your “to do” list!
An adventure family session is a type of family photography session that takes place in outdoor or natural settings. It focuses on capturing candid, dynamic moments of families engaged in activities. Unlike traditional poses or studio shots, these sessions often emphasize exploration, play, and adventure. Families might hike, picnic, play in the water, or simply explore the surroundings, creating an atmosphere where natural, joyful interactions can be photographed.
The goal of an adventure family session is to capture the spirit of family bonding, allowing the setting and activities to create unique, memorable photos. These sessions are popular because they tend to produce images that reflect the family’s personality and genuine moments rather than staged poses.
Meet the Schneider family!
The mom of the family is a photographer friend from the St. Louis area that I met through mutual friends! When she spontaneously planned a trip to Daytona, she asked for me to do an adventure family session for them!
This session took place at Lighthouse Point Park at the Ponce Inlet. During warm months, I frequently see manatees, dolphins in the distance, or an occasional sea turtle pop its head up.
This session was very focused on following the lead of the children, who found shark teeth, shells, and even caught a crab. There were moments of posed portraits but those moments were short and sweet. The majority of time was spent exploring the shores, climbing rocks, and wading through the water. Then when the big kids were done we let them swim while I took pictures of just mom and dad together, because they deserve a spotlight too!
A family photo session becomes an adventure when it involves engaging in fun, active experiences in an outdoor or unique setting, creating a sense of exploration and spontaneity. Here are some elements that make a family photo session adventurous:
By combining these elements, a family photo session transforms into a fun and memorable adventure!
I hope next time you choose to book family photos, I’ve convinced you to make it an adventure family photo session!
All my love,
Katherine
